Getting to the roots of value-free
In “Are Algorithms Value-Free?” Professor Johnson makes extremely important points on how machine learning processes and algorithms can not be value-free and at the end of the day even science itself requires a set of inferences and assumptions to start off of. Since there is bias in everything we do, the best we can aim for is getting as close as possible to eliminating bias or finding a system that works. However, because our current society is systemically oppressive, all the theories that are created only “legitimate and perpetuate the socio-political values on which they’re built” (9). As a result, none of the theories we create or the machines we build will successfully block out bias and should not be treated as invincible.
In the end, our priority should be on understanding the source of our biases and working towards addressing and eliminating them. As talked about in our previous classes, this may come in the form of developing double consciousness and recognizing there are multiple perspectives in every situation or acknowledging the consequences history has on our present state. Like my classmates, I do wonder if it is possible to correct algorithms so that they are less biased, but I recognize that in doing so we are still implementing our own biases in deciding what aspects to change and to what extent.
I also agree that there is some truth to “the principle of uniformity of nature,” and I believe that in certain aspects it may not be trivial. Since we can acknowledge there have been recurring patterns throughout history such as the perpetuation of racism, wars, etc, we can study what causes history to repeat itself and change the way we address issues in the future. In the case of machine learning and the concept of being value-free, given the way technology has advanced and been used to justify biases, we can make the assumption that even more machines/algorithms will be used to justify these biases in the future. Therefore, with this knowledge we know to act with urgency now in stopping the current oppressive systems in place.
