Illegal Immigrants and Voting Rights

In this post I will be discussing the issue of illegal immigrants and if they deserve voting rights, based on Brettschneider’s paper. Some people illegally immigrate due to political corruption. If they are immigrating due to political corruption, I will assume their home country’s government is unfair and unjust. Thus, these people don’t have a state with a fair democracy. In Brettschneider paper he states, “Stateless people have no status within the current international community that organizes itself through the nation-state. Each individual has a right to democracy, meaning that they need to be represented in some form by the government” (148). This quote made me question if illegal immigrants, based on their situation, may be considered to be stateless, since their government isn’t acting as a democracy, and is extremely unjust. With that, these people are then seeking democracy by entering a state with a good democracy, and more just system.

Now, it seems the initial mode of action to help these illegal immigrants would be to grant them citizenship. However, if they are not being granted citizenship in a timely manner, should they be allowed to vote? Obviously, illegal immigrants are not citizens, but they are still human and thus free and equal beings. They deserve the right to join and participate in a democracy.  In January 2022, Fifteen municipalities across the country allowed noncitizens to vote in local elections. So it seems some places in our country believe non-citizens, including illegal immigrants, deserve the right to vote. Illegal immigrants face many unjust situations, like inhumane living conditions, and unjust actions like being stripped from their families. Thus, it seems reasonable for them to have a way to advocate for themselves. Through civic participation these people could improve the conditions for immigration.

However, there are many issues that would arise in implementing policies which allow illegal immigrants to vote. In doing so it would be very difficult to track illegal immigrants votes and open up the possibility of corruption. With that many people may fear it could cause issues with our voting results. For the sake of this post, I will only focus on the theory behind this reasoning.
